Green School New Zealand

Green School New Zealand is the first of its kind in the country to bring a focus of environmental awareness into the classroom. They opened their campus in 2020, with a mission to create a global community of learners. With a focus on natural materials, the design developed by Boon Team Architects, incorporated complex Glulam timber members forming the shape of a kina.

Livingstone were engaged to construct Stage Two of the school campus development, delivering the Junior School (or ‘Kina’) and to develop an Innovation Hub known as the ‘iHub.’ The Kina consists of four modules and one atrium. One module consists of two classrooms and a resource/breakout room. Between each module is bag storage and bathroom facilities. The centre of the Kina incorporates 300m2 of decking as classroom access and has a tree detailed as a unique centre point.

Due to the unique shape of the building, which has never been constructed before in New Zealand, extensive use of BIM (Building Information Modelling) and 3D Modelling was required. TimberLab was engaged by Livingstone to manufacture the complex curved timber members, consisting of 24x curved portals, several complicated ‘eyebrow members’, and curved purlins and battens. The Livingstone project team have been closely involved from the beginning of the project to provide advice on buildability and offer possible solutions.
