Nestled amongst the vibrant green hills below Tuhikaramea, the David O. McKay Stake and Cultural Events Centre has been welcomed by visitors from throughout the Pacific as they come to participate in sacred temple ordinances.
Originally built by missionaries in the 1950’s, the focus of this development was to replace the existing building with a modern community facility, whilst maintaining the site’s historic architectural values and continuity with existing buildings.
The 4000m2 multi-use community building, developed for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and its congregation, incorporates a chapel, cultural hall, teaching blocks and administration area, is part of the staged Temple View Project. The centre replaces the Church College of NZ, purpose built to be four times the size of any other stake meeting house.
Through creating permanence and honesty in its design, the centre reflects its key conceptual elements. The building is for religious purposes, and the intention is that this new building would reflect the values of the religion.
The Projects Prophetic Vision is to “protect the sanctity and environment of the Hamilton New Zealand temple”. The Temple View Project has been carefully crafted through decades worth of planning to reflect this this.
